Established in 1901, we are a friendly and enthusiastic four-part male voice choir — a registered charity based in Hadley, Telford. We’re looking for a committed choral leader to take us into the next stage of our musical development, working with a welcoming group of singers who enjoy a varied repertoire for local audiences, community events, concerts and charitable occasions. Our current Musical Director, Robyn Davies MBE, steps down at the end of 2026, and we are looking for her successor to take up the role from the new year — the exact start date is flexible and by arrangement.

The Role

The Musical Director is responsible for the musical leadership of the choir — planning and leading rehearsals, developing vocal technique and musicianship, shaping concert programmes, and conducting performances. You’ll work closely with the choir Trustees and accompanist to maintain an enjoyable, inclusive and musically rewarding environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead regular choir rehearsals in an encouraging and purposeful manner.
  • Conduct the choir at concerts, community performances and other engagements in a busy schedule.
  • Select and develop suitable repertoire for a male voice choir, balancing traditional favourites with fresh and engaging material.
  • Support singers in improving vocal technique, blend, confidence and performance skills.
  • Work collaboratively with the accompanist, Trustees and choir members on concert planning and musical priorities.
  • Help the choir attract, retain and develop members through positive musical leadership.

What We’re Looking For

  • An experienced choral conductor or musician with an understanding of male voice singing.
  • A confident, organised and approachable choir leader.
  • Someone able to motivate singers of mixed experience and musical ability.
  • Good knowledge of choral repertoire and the ability to choose music appropriate to the choir.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach.
  • Keyboard skills would be helpful, but are not essential.

Terms

This is a part-time, self-employed position. Rehearsals are weekly on Monday evenings. A start date and remuneration will be agreed with the successful candidate according to availability, experience and the choir’s programme. Occasional weekend, evening or daytime performances will be required.
